Supporting Vocabulary Development in Young Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children with Explicit/Contextualized Vocabulary Instruction

Course Description:
Explicit/Contextualized Vocabulary Instruction (ECVI) is a comprehensive approach to vocabulary instruction for d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) children. In this presentation, the foundations underlying ECVI will be provided, including the relationship between vocabulary and reading, followed by descriptions and models of the ECVI strategies. Adaptations for classroom, itinerant, and early intervention home services will be shared. In addition, participants will have the opportunity to begin planning their own ECVI unit.

Use specific strategies to promote vocabulary instruction (e.g., fast-mapping, interactive book reading, and conversation)
