Course Description:
The overarching aims of this presentation is to delve into the impetus for my study on immigrant deaf students of color (IDSOC). My operational definition for this student population will be outlined vis a vis my positionality as someone who share similar identities with them but also diverge in ways that will turn out relevant in my study. Then, we'll talk about raciolinguistic ideologies and their manifestations and ramifications on their experiences as they navigate US deaf education system. Other related theoretical frameworks will be touched on (eg. language ideologies/attitudes, "deaf native signerism", translanguaging, "atypical languaging", crip linguistics). Unique considerations of being IDSOCs will be discussed in depth (how different are they from the general deaf student population). Some quotes that I have garnered from my interviews with them will be shown and I will be discussing the implications of these quotes in your practices. Concrete approaches on engaging with IDSOCs and their families will be communicated as well.
Agenda
6:00-6:10: Who are the immigrant deaf students of color? (IDSOC)
6:10-6:20: Brief "autoethnographic" account of self vis a vis IDSOC (some discussion of my 2022 article in the journal Languages)
6:20-6:30: Literature review on IDSOC
6:30-6:45: Frameworks and other theories that have been used when discussing their experiences
6:45-7:05: IDSOC from the Asian diaspora and the importance of intersectionality
7:05-7:15: Quotes from IDSOC and exposition and implications of each
7:15-7:25: Perspectives from which to support IDSOC
7:25-7:45: Concrete ways on how to support IDSOC
7:45-8:00: Q&A
Learner Outcomes:
Participants will be able to:
Describe the experiences of immigrant deaf students of color from a more informed perspective
State theories and frameworks that would foster understanding of the immigrant deaf student of color experience, especially those from the Asian diasporic groups
