Course Description:

The visual and motor systems are deeply interconnected, playing a vital role in a child’s ability to achieve expected gross and fine motor developmental milestones. Postural stability is imperative and precedes a child’s ability to be able to have distal mobility, including visually guided reach. This connection is especially crucial in young children, ages 0-3, with complex needs and cerebral/cortical visual impairment (CVI), where visual processing challenges can significantly impact postural stability, self-initiated movement, functional reach and interaction with his/her environment. This session will delve into key factors influencing posture and functional reach. We will explore practical strategies to support a child’s body through positioning to enhance purposeful movement.

Agenda

7:00-7:05: Introduction

7:05-7:20: Brief review of in-utero development

7:20-7:40: Development of postural stability and how it relates to brain-based vision loss

7:40-8:20: Expanding a child’s ability to move functionally, create autonomy and increase meaningful interaction with people and objects in the environment

8:20-8:45: Consult with a team of therapists (OT, PT, seating and mobility) to help determine appropriate equipment

8:45-9:00: Conclusion and Q&A

Learner Outcomes:

Participants will be able to:

  1. State ideal postural alignment and developmental positioning techniques to facilitate self-initiated movement and visually guided reach in young children

  2. Identify essential CVI modifications to the environment that will support meaningful and goal-oriented movement of the young child

  3. Explain the scaffolding motor and vision abilities to build appropriate goals toward expanding movement
