Course Description:
The phenomenon of language deprivation, sometimes coined Language Deprivation Syndrome, has been discussed amongst the Deaf community and the professionals who serve them for years, yet many SLPs outside of this specialty remain unfamiliar with it. We argue that it is important for all SLPs to learn about this phenomenon, even those who do not work with the DHH population. The concept of Language Deprivation has the potential for significant impacts on speech-language assessment and intervention practices for a variety of populations, including but not limited to autistic children, children with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities, and children experiencing Adverse Childhood Events that impact their language exposure.
This presentation will review the definition of Language Deprivation as based on the current DHH literature and then extend the discussion to include how Language Deprivation may impact other populations, drawing from the existing literature and specifying which environmental factors and client characteristics (e.g. sensory perceptual and processing abilities, self-regulation and other Executive Function skills, cognitive strengths and weaknesses, motoric abilities, social preferences, etc.) might impact access to language exposure. Finally, needs for further research will be briefly explored.
