Course Description:

This presentation explores the critical importance of early vision screening in infants and toddlers from birth to three years of age. Attendees will gain an understanding of visual development milestones, risk factors for early childhood vision disorders, and evidence-based screening tools appropriate for young children. Emphasis will be placed on the role of early detection and intervention in preventing long-term visual impairment and supporting developmental outcomes. This session is ideal for healthcare professionals, early intervention providers, and educators involved inpediatric care and early childhood development.

1:00-1:10: Introduction; why this topic matters; overview of early development

1:10-1:25: The visual system and the developing brain; how vision supports cognitive, social, and communication milestones

1:25-1:50: The relationship between vision and language: receptive and expressive language

1:50-2:10: Visual impairments and language risk; overview of common pediatric vision conditions

2:10-2:25: Case studies and real-world examples

2:25-2:40: Assessments and red flags; signs that vision might be affected communication

2:40-2:50: Supporting language development in children with vision impairment

2:50-3:00: Discussion, Q&A

Learner Outcomes:

Participants will be able to:

  1. Identify normal visual development milestones in children from birth to 3 years of age

  2. Describe common risk factors and early signs of visual impairment in infants and toddlers

  3. Explain the importance of early vision screening and its role in developmental outcomes
