Course Description:

This workshop will explore the evolution of Deaf Education, shifting from a focus on communication modes (oral, manual, total communication) to language access and development. Participants will examine research-backed evidence on brain development, the critical period for language acquisition, and the long-term effects of language deprivation. Through case studies, interactive discussions, and role-playing activities, attendees will gain practical strategies to collaborate across disciplines, assess language needs dynamically, and implement bilingual-bimodal approaches in educational settings..

6:10-6:25: Historical Context: Past vs. present focus in Deaf Education

6:25-6:45: The Importance of Language First: Brain development & research on language deprivation

6:45-6:55: Discussion & Reflection: Sharing experiences and challenges

6:55-7:15: Collaborative Roles: How SLPs, deaf educators, and interpreters can work together

7:15-7:35: Implementation Strategies: Dynamic Language Assessments, classroom supports, and intervention strategies

This event is offered for 0.20 ASHA CEUs and 0.20 RID CEUs. Only participants who attend the live event will receive a certificate of attendance. Participants who attend the entire webinar and fill out the self assessment form will be considered eligible to earn ASHA CEUs.

MassRID is an approved continuing education activity sponsor, and this event is being offered at 0.2 Professional Studies CEUs at the "some previous knowledge" content level.  Attendance during the entire workshop is required for earning CEUs.  A certificate is provided to those who request CEUs via the given link to a Google Forms document.
